16th May 1943 – just as the sun was setting on a cool spring evening, an elite group of RAF bombers assembled. Ready to take on one of the most daring missions of the Second World War.
In the quiet depths of a moonlit night, there emerged a force unparalleled in unwavering bravery. The gallant Lancaster Bombers charged, the sound of the engines thundering, as the moon cast its gentle glow upon the waters below, the Dambusters descended with unwavering precision, their eyes fixed upon the objective.
Their target? Right in the heartland of industrial Germany lay three Dams, identified by the British War Cabinets as important strategic targets which could change the course of the War. The operation required a degree of skill and accuracy never before attained with previous technology.
And so came one of the most ingenious developments to come out of Wartime Britain. A bomb that could, believe it or not, bounce along the surface of the water. The backspin on the bomb meant it could reach the target Dam, before sinking to the base and detonating at the source, causing mass destruction.
It was this, combined with the unparalleled courage and audacity of the Dambuster pilots, that the mission became one of the most famous air operations of the Second World War.
19 crews set out that night. 8 never returned.
Eight decades have passed since that fateful night when the courageous souls of the Royal Air Force, soared into the unknown. And to mark an event that was so influential to Britain’s success during the war, a remarkable precious metal coin range has been authorised by Buckingham Palace, approved by King Charles III.
